What is Form IT-201-X?
Quick answer: Form IT-201-X corrects a previously filed New York resident return (Form IT-201). You complete the whole six-page form as if you were filing the return for the first time, with the corrected figures, and explain the reasons for the change on the last page. Generally you must file within three years of the date you filed the original or two years of the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you amend your federal return or the IRS changes it, a New York amended return is usually required within 90 days.
Unlike some states, New York does not use a side-by-side “original, change, corrected” layout. IT-201-X is a full, fresh return with corrected numbers. What makes it an amended return is the reason section on page 6, the special items on page 1, and two lines that must copy your original return: sales or use tax (line 59) and voluntary contributions (line 60).
Do not file it before your original return, and do not use it simply to argue with an assessment. It has a separate purpose: to fix mistakes, report changes made by the IRS, file a protective claim, report a net operating loss carryback, or fix your identification number.

- Lines that cannot change: sales or use tax (line 59) and voluntary contributions (line 60).

Who Must File Form IT-201-X?
You must file an amended 2025 New York return if any of these applies:
- you made an error on your original return;
- the IRS changed your 2025 federal return;
- you need to file a protective claim for 2025; or
- you need to report a net operating loss carryback.
Use IT-201-X only if you filed the original return as a full-year resident; part-year residents and nonresidents amend on Form IT-203-X. Do not file it to protest a paid assessment that came from a statement of audit changes. Follow the instructions that came with the assessment instead.
Common trap: filers try to raise or lower their use tax on IT-201-X. The amount on line 59 must match the original return. To pay more use tax, file Form ST-141; to claim a refund of use tax, file Form AU-11.
How to File Form IT-201-X

- Attach amended forms (such as an amended IT-196 or credit form) marked “Amended” across the top, plus any new form you are using for the first time.
- Resubmit the original versions of credit claim forms and withholding forms you are not amending, such as IT-213, IT-215, IT-216, IT-2, IT-196, IT-201-ATT and IT-227.

- Pay any balance with the return, using Form IT-201-V if paying by check, and include the interest you calculate on line 81.
When Is Form IT-201-X Due?
There is no single date. The general limit is three years from the date you filed the original return (using the actual due date if you filed early) or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. How to Complete Form IT-201-X Line by Line
Page 1 — Identification, Item D1 and Special Condition Codes
The top of the form matches the original IT-201. Item D1 asks whether you filed an amended federal return; you must mark Yes or No. In item G repeat every special condition code from your original return and add new ones if needed: A6 to reduce NYAGI for Build America Bond interest, P2 for a protective claim, N3 for an NOL carryback, C7 for combat zone relief, 56 for a Ponzi-type theft loss, Y1 for spouses with different Yonkers residency, and M4 through M9 for Servicemembers Civil Relief Act elections.
Lines 1–58 — Corrected Income, Deductions and Tax
These lines mirror IT-201: federal income and adjustments, New York additions and subtractions, the standard or itemized deduction, dependent exemptions, tax, credits, city and Yonkers taxes and MCTMT. Enter the correct amounts. If you are claiming itemized deductions on both returns, NYAGI is $100,000 or less in both, you are not changing the deductions and are not claiming the college tuition deduction, submit a copy of your original IT-196; otherwise recalculate on a new IT-196.
Lines 59–60 — Sales or Use Tax and Voluntary Contributions
Enter the same amounts you reported on the original return. You cannot change them here. Line 60 should equal your original Form IT-227 total, adjusted if the Tax Department previously changed it, and you must submit the original IT-227 with the amended return.
Lines 63–77 — Refundable Credits and Payments
Enter corrected refundable credits, tax withheld and estimated payments. Line 76 is the amount you paid with the original return plus any additional tax paid since, taken from line 80 of the original IT-201 (or line 70 of IT-203); do not include interest or penalties. Line 77 totals all payments.
Lines 78–81 — Original Overpayment, Refund or Amount Owed
| Line | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Line 78 | The overpayment shown on the original return (or as adjusted by the state). |
| Line 78a | The amount from the original IT-201. |
Line 79 subtracts line 78 from line 77. If line 79 is more than line 62 the difference is your refund on line 80; mark direct deposit or paper check. If it is smaller, the difference is the amount you owe on line 81, plus interest you calculate with the Tax Department’s interest calculator.
Line 82 — Account Information
For direct deposit or electronic withdrawal enter the account type (82a), the nine-digit routing number (82b) and account number (82c). On 82d, enter the withdrawal date and amount. If you amend before the original due date, choose a date on or before it. Accounts outside the United States cannot be used; pay by check or money order and expect a mailed refund check.
Page 6 — Reasons for Amending (Line 83)
Mark every reason that applies: 83a federal audit change (complete lines 84 to 91), 83b worthless stock, 83c claim of right, 83d wages, 83e military, 83f court ruling, 83g workers’ compensation, 83h treaties/visa, 83i tax shelter transaction, 83j credit claim, 83k protective claim (also enter code P2), 83l net operating loss (also enter N3 and the loss year), 83m report Social Security number, 83n other with an explanation, and 83o partnership or S corporation adjustments. Attach whatever supports the change, such as Form 1040-X, IRS acceptance, or revised Schedule K-1.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Filing IT-201-X before the original return. An amended return can only follow an original.
- Changing use tax or contributions. Lines 59 and 60 must match the original.
- Attaching the original IT-201. The instructions say not to.
- Leaving out forms. If you omit forms, the Tax Department can disallow the credits on the missing forms.
- Skipping the explanation. Explain the changes fully on the form; missing details can slow your refund.
- Missing the 90-day IRS deadline. IRS changes must be reported within 90 days.
- Filing IT-201-X for a part-year year. Use IT-203-X instead.
